Indian team Selection for New Zealand and Bangladesh Tour

Indian Cricket Selection committee have recently announced squads for upcoming series against New Zealand and Bangladesh during the ongoing World Cup in Australia. The New Zealand tour is just after the WC and there is small gap between New Zealand & Bangladesh tour. So the Selection Panel have decided the squads much prior to the start of the tours. India is set to play 2 ODI series and 1 Test and T20 series each combined in these two tours.

Interestingly there are 4 different squads have been announced which is very much confusing also. Some of the senior and regular players have been rested while some of the players who were recently played and part of the team have been dropped also. While some new players have been get maiden call-up. Hardik Pandya is going to lead in T20Is and Shikhar Dhawan in ODIs in New Zealand tour. While regular skipper Rohit Sharma will lead both in ODIs and Tests in Bangladesh tour.

First of all take a look at the squads announced for both tours:-

Talking Points from the Squad Selection:-

It is quite understandable that due to hectic schedule and packed games maintaining workload of players and giving them proper rest is vital. That’s why we saw so many of changes in different squads. While some are rested, some are dropped due to non-performance and few are given maiden call-ups, to praise their recent performance, but the main point that is raising questions on these selections that is missing of few extremely deserving players.

At the same time non-selection of players who have done well in recent times and mixing selections in different format wise, also confusing and little bit frustrating for players and their well-wishers. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli are among rested players while selectors are likely to move from Ravichandran Ashwin and  Dinesh Karthik, though they have told we are open for all.

Players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Venkatesh Iyer, Umesh Yadav are dropped from all the squads. These are the players who have been part of the team in most recent times. Apart from Ravi Bishnoi’s exclusion no other non-selection are very questionable but particularly Ravi deserved to be picked. It is un-understandable why he got dropped?

No Shaw and Sarfaraz yet !

Prthivi Shaw has set this year’s SMAT on fire with blistering average of 47 and strike rate of 191. And on other hand Sarfaraz Khan is currently the Don Bradman of Domestic Cricket. Shaw could have been easily picked in the T20 side on the current form and has the potential of different level in T20s. Especially at the top where India need it.  And Sarfaraj is in form of his life in first class cricket and thoroughly deserved a place in India’s Test team.

27 Players in 2 ODI Series:-

After this World Cup, India’s next big assignment will be ICC Cricket World Cup of 50 overs format in India. And preparation should start from the next ODI series. But here the selection are most confusing. 27 players in total are got picked across 2 tours in which only 6 are common. Last time we lost the WC in 2019 due to lack of preparation in terms of selections and combination and now these confusing selections making no sense.
