Group-2 Scenario

Group-2 Qualification Scenario

We are almost in the last moment of the most entertaining T20 World Cup of all time. The mega event is now just one week to finish and between this Sunday to next Sunday we will get our new World Champion. We have got our two Semi-finalists from group-1 in form of New Zealand & England.

Now it’s time for teams from group-2, which will be decided after tomorrow which is the last day of league stage in this tournament. There are 3 matches to be played tomorrow, South Africa vs Netherlands and Pakistan vs Bangladesh at Adelaide Cricket Ground, finally India vs Zimbabwe at the MCG.

These three games will decide that which two teams will qualify to the Semis from this group. With Netherlands already out of the tournament and Zimbabwe having very low outside chance the fight is between top 4 teams- India, South Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Let us see all the scenarios for each and every team for qualifications.

The scenarios are given here without considering the rain factor.

India

For Indian team it is pretty simple.

  • ΓΌ Netherlands beat South Africa.
  • ΓΌ Bangladesh beat Pakistan in close game.(If South Africa wins)
  • ΓΌ India simply beat Zimbabwe

In case Zimbabwe win against India, still India can make it to Semis provided 2nd results became true. But from above all conditions 3rd one is most suitable. India just need to win the game and they will finish at top in the group.

South Africa

It’s a do or die for South Africa

  • ΓΌ     South Africa beat Netherlands.

Their only chance to make into knockouts by beating the Dutch. If they loss they will be out. As they will stay at 5 points and India is already at 6. Pakistan and Bangladesh are both at 4 so, their match against each other will be virtual Quarter Final. Whoever wins will reach at 6 and hence South Africa will be out.

Pakistan

Pakistan is in a bit tricky situation.

  • ΓΌ Netherlands win against South Africa.
  • ΓΌ Pakistan beat Bangladesh.
  • ΓΌ Zimbabwe beat India.(If South Africa wins)

If South Africa lose against the Dutch (Netherlands) then Pakistan just needs to beat Bangladesh, in that case they will qualify. India vs Zimbabwe result will don’t matter. If India lose to Zimbabwe then Pakistan will finish at top in the group.

Bangladesh

For Bangla tigers, it is even more complex.

  • ΓΌ Netherlands beat South Africa.
  • ΓΌ Bangladesh beat Pakistan.(By huge margin if South Africa wins)
  • ΓΌ Zimbabwe win against India.(By huge margin)

Their case is very much similar to Pakistan. If Netherlands upsets South Africa then Bangladesh just need a win against Pakistan. But if that doesn’t happen then they need to beat Pakistan with a huge margin and expect Zimbabwe to does the same with India. For beating the NRR of India both wins have to be of huge margins.

We are not considering the case of Zimbabwe, though they have still an outside chance. But that will be involving rains and washouts, so as we have clearly not considered them in our scenarios, so we are neglecting Zimbabwe factor. While Netherlands are already out of the tournament. If everything goes well it is mostly anticipated that India & South Africa will be entering into the Semis from group-2.
