India tour of Bangladesh

Bangladesh wins another ODI series against India at home.

ODI cricket of India at a glance in 2022

Indian team have lost back to back two ODI series on the trot away from home. And with this loss our team have lost 3rd series in this year, which is a record in last 25 years. For the first time we have lost 3 ODI series in a single year. Tough, we haven’t played much cricket in last 3 or 4 years in particular this format.

Last year we have just played 2 ODI series but this year we have played 4 times more than that, i.e. 8 series. Obviously due to Co-vid the FTP were rescheduled and in eying to next year’s 50 over World Cup in home, this amount of matches have been played. Overall, we have done well this year in ODIs. We have won 5 series out of those 8 series.

But the fact is that we haven’t played as a whole unit in this year for most of the times. Some of the key players were injured and some of the players are out of form right now. But with there is some time left for the World Cup. India might play their best XI from next year.

Towards the end of the year we have lost an ODI series against Bangladesh at their home. Last time also we had lost in Bangladesh in 2015-16. This wasn’t a result you expect from a top team and as fans it is hard to believe. Our batting looked ordinary and bowling looked clueless in first two games against the hosts.

We played like a champion side in the last ODI game where we scored over 400 run and won by a mammoth margin of 227 runs. Ishan Kishan scored his maiden ODI 100 and made it a huge one with fastest ever 200. He scored 210, whereas Virat Kohli scored his 44th ODI ton, 72nd overall in International Cricket, almost after 3 and half years.

But this was more of a wakeup call for Indian team to allow new generation and fresh players to take Indian Cricket forward. The match will be remembered as Ishan Kishan’s master class for his record breaking double ton in ODIs.

A player not getting enough opportunity, missed Asia Cup and T20 WC due to team combination, have given a statement in a single game and perhaps showed a clear idea of how to approach in modern day game. Other youngsters are also of this mindset, and it is just a matter of time and giving them that luxury of playing attacking brand of cricket under a strong and visionary management, we could see a new India, changed India, and dominating India.

Time to take the tough calls:-

Indian team management constantly giving chances to their senior and experienced players. This is not a big issue, but even after constant failure from them in big games, continuing with them is not ideal. Yes, we can’t ignore every players and their contribution but still team management needs to create some opportunity for young players and use their current forms.

Players like Shubhman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson in ODIs have done well this year, so need to be given regular chances. Meanwhile, someone like Ruturaj Gaikwad who was excellent during Vijay Hazare Trophy this year, can be used as back up option. Other thing that team management needs to do is not mixing formats and utilizing players in their deserved formats.

For example, players like- Rajat Patidar and Rahul Tripathy have done well in IPL, so it is ideal to use them in T20Is, but we are just benching them in ODIs. While other youngsters who deserved to be in the team likes of Prthivi Shaw in T20Is and Sarfaraz Khan in tests should be considered as soon as possible.

With the schedules for upcoming ODI Series in home being announced by BCCI, and about 9 ODIs to be played before IPL during 3 series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia. So, team management would most probably look to build the core squad for the WC and prepare according to that.
