Indian Cricket in 2k22
2022 for Indian Cricket
2022 started with a horrible
note for team India and as they were unable to win series in South Africa, in
possibly best ever chances in tests and also got whitewashed by the home side
in ODIs. But apart from that test series loss, bigger news came that Virat
Kohli has stepped down as India’s Test Captain. This was a bit shocker as no
one has ever anticipated such thing to come.
But eventually that happened
after 3rd test match. In just 5 to 6 month’s span everything changes
in Indian team regarding leadership roles. Virat stepped down as T20Is Captain
and then was removed from ODI captaincy to maintain one captain in white ball
format. But Virat stepping down as test captain was biggest moment at that
situation. However, Rohit Sharma was made captain after that in all 3 formats
and KL Rahul as his deputy.
The main focus was T20
cricket for the team and captain Rohit as India failed to make semis in 2021
T20WC and another WC was in next few months. They changed the approach towards
the format and started emphasizing on that format. And in that process ODIs was
neglected by main players. And due to packed schedule to adjust all games two
teams were formed and played simultaneously.
The biggest challenge that
the team faced during this time was absent of key players due to injury. Even
our captain and VC were out of team due to injury issues, for which we had to
made changes in our leadership roles. About 7 to 8 captains were appointed in 6
to 7 month time across formats. VVS Laxman simultaneously coached team India
with 2nd string team in smaller tours like Zimbabwe, Ireland etc.
And due to this constant changes, the team never got sorted.
As far as format is
considered we were doing well in limited over formats. Winning bilateral series
seems quite easier to us. But in tests we failed another time in one of test in
England where Rohit had to sit out due to Co-vid. This was like the South
Africa series, where we lost the opportunity to create history. That one of
test was remainder from previous 2021 England tour, where we were already 2-1
ahead. But that loss in this time put the series at 2-2. And the series was
drawn.
In this period we were doing well in T20Is and ODIs also in bilateral series, e.g. we won series in home against Srilanka and West Indies, the drawn South Africa series 2-2 at home. We beat England, West Indies, Ireland and Zimbabwe in away tours also. But our biggest challenge was Asia Cup in UAE andT20 WC in Australia. But we failed in both the instances.
The most hurting thing was
we failed to make the finals in Asia Cup and lost once again in T20WC knockout
game. That moment was where everything changes have been made during
Rohit-Rahul era was questioned a lot. The purpose for which Rohit was made
leader that not fulfilled and more bad thing was his approach, that he said we
are gone change, not seemed to be happen in entire WC.
Adding to all these failures in biggest stage we lost ODI series in New Zealand and Bangladesh towards the end. And that created debate and raised question over current set of players. People now demanding to change the team and bring new faces to team for next year and just drop these out of form players.
The last series that India
played, that was Test series against Bangladesh which we won 2-0 but not the
way it should have done. And due to the next WTC final is to be played in June
this year and we are in the contention for that, so, the next series against Australia,
The BGT is very much vital now. So, we might go with same set of players, which
are playing now.
But in limited overs we have already seen this overwhelm changes. Particularly in T20, the captain is changed and so does the team. The board and selectors have set their target of mission 2024 and for that they have made the strict decision.
But in ODIs as it
is not so poor, so, they have kept faith in some of the senior players. But
this time they are much more proactive in terms of clarity on thought and
performance. So let’s see what 2023 brings out of team India.
