WPL, A Revolution in Women's Cricket!

Women Premier League, A Revolution in Women’s Cricket!

It’s been 15 years since IPL had started and today the league have reached at a highest level. We are knowing this as the biggest cricketing league around the world. And moreover it has changed Indian cricket completely in a positive way. Our player pool have increased a lot as, we can field 3 different teams for different formats at same point of time. This is the biggest outcome from this mega domestic league for us. And also player participating in it are getting exposure of International star’s companion, which helping them to handle pressure in a better way.

Now, “The Women Premier League (WPL)”, will do the same thing for Women’s cricket. Cricketing world or specially Women Cricketers have been waiting for this moment for long time. And finally, they are having it. There are some other leagues like BBL & The Hundred are also happening for Women’s Cricket, but we all know what WPL can do. It will not just help players to grow financially but also the standard of cricket here will be of next level. And another important factor is that, the crowd here will be absolutely large and the atmosphere will be electric.

This was much needed for our cricket, as the Indian Women cricketers will also get the proper platform to show their skills and utility. The pressure here will be of international standard and that will help the players to raise their ability of handling pressure in International games. At the same time our player pool will be become larger just like Men’s team and the domestic as well as the junior players will get enough opportunities. With the 1st ever U19WC for women just concluded and India becoming the winner, 1st season of WPL just after the T20WC 2023 will be icing on the cake.

Pre-Season Preparation:-

Bids for Teams

Before starting a big league like WPL, a lot of works had to be done. And BCCI have planned it accordingly. First of all BCCI asked interested franchises to submit their bids for team formation. And lots of companies and franchises were interested for it, out of which 5 were chosen. A total of 4670 Cr bid had been made combined by 5 teams.

Let us first see the 5 franchises:-

  1. Ahmedabad based Adani Sportsline Pvt. Ltd at price 1289Cr
  2.  Mumbai based Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd at price 912.99Cr
  3. Bengaluru based Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd at price 901Cr
  4. Delhi based JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd at price 810Cr
  5. Lucknow based Capri Global Holdings Pvt. Ltd at price 757Cr

Media Rights

The Media Rights for the inaugural edition of WPL bagged by Viacom 18 at a huge price of 951Cr, which is 7.09 per match. This is huge for Women’s Cricket. And now, we can watch IPL & WPL both in Jio Cinema for free, which is great for viewers.

Teams

Now it was time for the announcement of names of all the 5 franchises. As 3 of the 5 teams are of existing IPL Owners, they named their women team as same as their men’s team. Those are-

 Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCBW)

Mumbai Indians (MIW)

Delhi Capitals (DCW)

The remaining two teams are of new franchises Ahmedabad & Lucknow.

UP Warriorz (UPW)

Gujarat Giants (GGT)

 1st ever WPL Auction:-

After all the arrangements had been made, the most important player auction happened on 13th February in Mumbai at the Jio World Convention Center in Mumbai. And we got to know which player sold to where and how the teams have formed. Before the auction total 1525 players registered for it, out of which 409 shortlisted, 246 were Indian, 163 were Overseas while 8 were from Associate Nations. Again 202 were capped while 199 were uncapped. And around 40 more added before the auction. So overall around 450 players went under the hammer on 13th.

The conditions for the teams while picking the squad were- every team have to pick minimum 15 and maximum 18 players in the squad. And the overseas limit will be 6. So, the total no. of players will be 90 from which 30 will be overseas. After the auction, a total no. of 87 players were sold including 30 overseas. The highest best price on which players had registered was 50L and India’s best batter Smriti Mandhana got the highest bid of 3.40Cr made by RCB.
