The Headache of IPL Retention & Mega Auction

IPL, Retention, Player Auction are those things, which brings a lot of excitement and curiosity to Cricket Fans. Particularly for Indian Cricket Fans. And, if the year is for Mega Auction, it adds more fun for the fans and as well as for IPL Franchises.

There is a Mega Auction Scheduled for the next season of IPL in 2025. And the Preparation has been already started. A formal meeting between The IPL Franchise Owners, IPL Governing Body and BCCI is going to happen towards end of July this year.

Here, the communication will be done among all the Parties, particularly regarding no of retentions that a team can do, whether there will be RTM concept like 2018 Mega Auction or not ? Also the “Impact Player Rule” will be discussed, whether to continue with it or scrap it?

Well, BCCI and IPL Authorities have already shortly communicated about all these matters and have taken suggestions from the Owners. There are some differences among the franchises about how many retentions should be allowed or should RTM be used this time or not?

But the responses have been varying from Team to team. It’s natural as, all the Teams have separate thought process. And the way they have performed in previous seasons also forcing them to do so.

We can expect, the teams which have been very successful over the years or recently and have maintained a solid core, are in favor of higher no of retentions (7-8). For e.g. KKR, MI, SRH and RR may be.

While teams that haven’t cracked the success formula in IPL yet, are in favor of very low no. of retention (2-3). Can particularly say PBKS. DC and RCB to an extent, but they will be happy with 4-5 retention also.

The Remaining 3 teams, CSK, GT and LSG will be probably looking for between those two categories. They might be also looking for 4-5 Retentions maximum.

The Concept is such that, some will be benefited from it and some have to rebuild their Team again, after losing key players in Retention process. But, the Stakeholders have to ensure that everyone should be treated equally and decisions should be made according to that.

Well, the Successful Teams like CSK, MI (5 times Champion each) and KKR, The Defending Champions, 3 Titles to their Name, are those ones who have been so Professional in maintaining their core and that domination in IPL.

These Franchises have teams in across the T20 Leagues all over the World and they take care of their teams and track Players Performance throughout the Year. So, they will be unhappy with this Mega Auction in very short span of time, which prevent them from maintaining their Core.

Along with them, some of the Franchises which have recently cracked that success idea and have got some results in IPL, will also feel the same. Such as RR, SRH, GT (Won IPL Title Once) and LSG (2 Playoffs in 3 Season).

But, RCB, DC and Particularly PBKS will be desperately wanting that Mega Auction as they have never been Professional ones and hence never got the opportunity to hold that Trophy. RCB is exception among them, having quite big names most of the times and having played 3 Finals. Still, not able to win a Title.

Let’s see how the things goes further, leading up to the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. At the moment, we are waiting for the Retention Rules and once it comes out it will be absolutely fun.
